five days a week
I take a Newfoundland named Ben
out for his lunchtime walk
five days a week
we pass by a funeral home
and I’ve been doing this same thing
for over six months
not once have I seen a single soul
coming in or going out
of this funeral home
and not once have I seen
any sort of funeral procession
leaving or approaching this funeral home
even on the weekends
I sometimes pass by
and see nothing
no action whatsoever
and I think to myself
that maybe it’s because of
the recession
the tough economic times
people can scrape by
make a living by the skin of their teeth
but nobody
not even the rich folks
can afford to die these days
