if you want to be a writer
that’s what they all say
the editors
and the masters
of this craft

read everything you can get your
hands on, everything
contemporary and past
read everyone
and all genres, too
from greek mythology
to chick lit
to the expiration dates
on coupons or gallons of milk

only by reading
will you gain the ability
to create your own words
words worth reading

well, it all makes sense to me
it really does

but when I am lying in bed
and I open a book
it’s only a matter of minutes
or pages
before I must get up

and begin to write
